The fear of the alter
by Toni Ullom
First let me explain the fear of the Lord.
Proverbs 8:13 " to hate evil, arrogance, evil ways, foolish talk,
pride." These are the things that offend God. If you indulge in these
then God will pour out his wrath. However, if you live a clean life and
stay away from the things mentioned above, you will have no reason to
fear God. He wants to be your best friend, the father or mother that you
can't turn to, in other words, he adores you and will do for you things
that no one else can or will do.
For those who live for him, he promises that they will have no want
according to Psalms 34:9. He promises prolonged life in Proverbs 10:27.
Proverbs 11:4 righteousness delivers from death. Proverbs 14:26 In fear
is strong confidence, refuge. Proverbs 14:27 Fountain of life that keeps
from the snares of death. Basically, what I am saying is that if you
avoid evil, arrogance, evil ways, foolish talk, pride and keep within
the teaching of the Bible, God will take care of you and you don't need
to be afraid of him because you are doing nothing to anger him. Like a
child who is obedient, a parent is proud and pleased and will give that
child more than a child who is unruly.
Now to the fear of the altar. It seems like a long walk from your seat
at church to the altar. Everyone is watching, it feels uncomfortable and
takes all the courage you can find to pull yourself off the bench. God
could care less where you ask forgiveness. The important thing is that
you ask forgiveness and begin to make the changes in your life that God
requires. You don't have to announce to anyone but God your wrong
doings. Your new actions will tell people that you are now serving God.
Isn't that simple? So don't fear repentance, God hears you, no matter
where you are.
